Mobile robots have become vital in modern manufacturing and logistics, with safety being a fundamental requirement for their operation. As industries embrace smart and automated systems, the application of mobile robots across production, logistics, and service sectors has significantly increased. Consequently, ensuring the operational safety of these robots has gained substantial attention. Safety sensors, a critical component for environmental perception in mobile robots, are increasingly vital in enhancing their reliability and safety.
Founded in 1963, Leuze is a global leader in intelligent sensor manufacturing and safety solutions, specializing in automation for logistics, manufacturing, and healthcare. In recent years, Leuze has expanded its portfolio to cater to mobile robots, aiming to elevate their safety and intelligence levels comprehensively.
Advancing Logistics Automation with Comprehensive Solutions
“Logistics automation has always been a key focus for Leuze and constitutes the largest share of our revenue globally, including in China. Our primary areas of focus include automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), conveyor systems, shuttle systems, and AGVs. These solutions support efficient storage, transportation, and sorting of goods,” said Zhang Yu, Managing Director of Leuze China.
Leuze’s early entry into logistics automation has granted it unmatched advantages in technology, industry knowledge, and experience. Since launching its RS2 series based on triangulation in 1990 and its RS4 series employing time-of-flight technology, Leuze has continued to innovate. The RSL400 series laser scanners built upon these foundations, setting benchmarks in performance, reliability, and compatibility with industrial mobile robot systems.
Leuze now offers an extensive range of sensor solutions for mobile robots, including measurement laser scanners, TÜV-certified safety laser scanners, and compact safety products tailored for small robots and specialized equipment. Additionally, Leuze provides optical, ultrasonic, and vision-based sensors that integrate seamlessly with industrial networks via gateways. These solutions cater to diverse customer demands for detection precision and range.
“Leuze’s comprehensive product portfolio, rich industry success stories, and a responsive team of sales and technical experts form the core of our competitive edge,” Zhang added.
“Safety at Leuze”: Building Competitive Advantage
As global demand grows for sensor products adhering to safety standards, Leuze sees immense potential in serving this market. Different regions impose strict safety requirements; for instance, compliance with CE and UL certifications is mandatory in the EU and the US, respectively. These standards encompass electrical and mechanical safety, such as shock protection, short-circuit prevention, and robust enclosures.
At the 2024 China Mobile Robot Industry Development Conference, Leuze unveiled two advanced laser scanners, including the RSL 200, designed specifically for natural navigation in AGVs. The RSL 200 features a robust yet compact design (80x80x86 mm), offering a 3-meter safety range, 15-meter warning range, 32 switchable protection zones, and optional natural navigation capabilities. Its 0.2° angular resolution and PL d safety level make it a standout product that combines safety with efficiency.
“Safety has always been a priority for Leuze, encapsulated in our global slogan, ‘Safety at Leuze.’ With decades of expertise and a deep understanding of safety standards, we provide solutions that span the entire lifecycle of machinery. Beyond laser scanners, we offer a range of safety products and services to meet evolving needs while ensuring system efficiency and uptime,” Zhang said.
Leuze is further advancing its mobile robot solutions by introducing safety control modules with speed monitoring and additional sensor packages tailored for specific applications.
Leveraging Global Insights and Expanding in China
With advancements in chip technology and the growing scale of applications, laser scanner prices have steadily decreased, increasing competition in the mobile robot industry. This has placed cost-reduction pressures on upstream component manufacturers, including sensor providers.
To adapt, Leuze has implemented targeted strategies:
- Design and Process Optimization: Innovating processes to reduce costs without compromising quality.
- Global Supply Chain Management: Establishing production facilities in China and Malaysia to cater to Asian markets efficiently while reducing logistics costs.
- Cost-Effective Solutions: Offering products and services that reduce lifecycle costs, including procurement, operation, and maintenance.
“Instead of competing solely on price, we focus on optimizing product design to meet performance parameters and enhance user experience,” Zhang explained.
Zhang also highlighted Leuze’s commitment to creating user-friendly, reliable products tailored to different operational requirements such as detection, communication, and safety. “Every product is thoughtfully designed, with extensive accessory options to support diverse installation needs and streamline maintenance.”
Supporting Global Expansion of Chinese Mobile Robots
As Chinese mobile robots gain traction internationally, Leuze is strengthening its global presence to support these ventures. Zhang praised Chinese companies for their cost-effective solutions and rapid software development capabilities, calling it a unique competitive edge.
“Chinese mobile robots are highly competitive on the global stage. With our worldwide service network and localized expertise, we are well-positioned to provide top-notch support for these manufacturers as they expand abroad,” Zhang said.
As mobile robots advance in intelligence, the demand for smarter and more customizable sensors grows. According to Zhang, this involves integrating “digital twin” concepts for deeper data insights and enabling structural customization to seamlessly embed sensors into robots.
“Leuze will continue developing sensors that serve as integral components of mobile robot systems, offering customized solutions that enhance industrial design and operational efficiency. Whether it’s safety, intelligence, or customization, our mission remains the same: to enable safer and smarter logistics equipment that extends its impact beyond borders,” Zhang concluded.
